I don't know what I want to do with my life

As a teacher/academic advisor/tutor I hear this line from teenagers and youngsters often.  "I don't know what I want to do with my life." This is of course completely understandable. Most 18 year-olds(and some 38 year olds) aren't sure what they want to do with their lives.

Invariably I point to study after study pointing to the value of education. Here is my favorite comeback for unsure students.... "Imagine you're at the end of your days, and you're reading a book about your life.  What do you want your book to say?"

This is deep question that requires a lot of thought. Also, what 18 year old Zach may have wanted as chapters is certainly different than what 30 year old Zach wants. But shouldn't this be something we REALLY THINK ABOUT?

If that doesn't help, I have them take an iseek skills assessment.  As the Avett Brothers say, "Decide what to be, and go be it." Here's that beautiful song if you're looking for a four minute treat.
